The hand on the right is mine. I'm holding a cashew out for a Fox Squirrel, who is about to take it. This is in the Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA.
The squirrel may be smelling the nut, but could be touching it with his nose to judge where it is. Squirrels can't see directly in front of their faces very well, with their eyes being on the side of their head.
