Stock photo licensing

All of the pictures on this website are recent, original photographs, and are available for use in exchange for a licensing fee. None of the photos on this site are available for royalty-free use. Click on any photo on this website to generate a licensing fee estimate for your use of that image. Images can also be purchased as prints.

Unauthorized redistribution will result in fees much greater than the original licensing fee would be (three to ten times the fair-market value for authorized use).

Licensing fee estimates

Photos are licensed on a single-use (or "rights managed") basis, and are not available on a royalty-free (unlimited use) basis. The licensing fees are based on how widely the image will be distributed. Below are sample fees for different uses for photos on this site taken by Chris Gregerson, but they are approximate. For a quote for a specific photo, please click on any photograph on this site and complete the short pull-down menus that appear.

If you prefer, you can email me (chris@cgstock.com) or reach me by phone at 612-245-4306. I will need a description of your use (including size, press run, and placement) and preferably the image number of the photo you wish to use.

Warning about copyright violation: If a photograph from this site is published without the permission of the copyright holder, or beyond the scope of the permission granted, the responsible party will be billed for three times the fair-market value for authorized use. If not paid within 10 days, the fee increases to ten (10) times fair-market value and I will file suit for that amount. Note that the photographs on this website have been registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, and I have successfully sued to collect damanges in Hennepin County Conciliation Court (case case #040120031 and case #050516029) and in US Federal Court: 06-cv-0116v, D. Minn., awarded $19,462 against an infringer.

Non-commercial use notes

Some examples of non-commercial use would be use by a government agency, public school, or non-profit organization. Use on a personal webpage would also qualify. If such an organization requests use of a photo from me this use my be permitted at no charge if:
  1. The copyright notice on the photo you want to use says "Chris Gregerson"; I cannot grant free use for work by other photographers.
  2. A photo credit must be published with the photo; for non-commercial web use the HTML code below would suffice.
  3. Images cannot be altered, such as adding text, logos, or other graphic elements (I will make exceptions on a case-by-case basis).
  4. Pictures can't be incorporated into material for which you charge money, such as a book or merchandise, even if you are a non-profit. That would be considered commercial use.
  5. Images are not property or model released unless they are specifically labeled as model released.

Commercial use notes

To get a quote for your exact use, click the hyperlink underneath the image that you wish to use that reads "license this image". This will generate a form with some questions about your use, with the correct image number already entered. Once you submit the form, I will reply by email or phone within 24 hours.

You can email me directy if you prefer. I will need to know the image number and how you will be using the image (including the size, press run, and placement).

Use of a picture(in whole or as part of a composite image) by a commercial business is considered "commercial use". This applies to web and print use, including editorial use (such as a newsletter, book, or informational website). Internal company use by a for-profit business would also considered "commercial use".

Unauthorized use, whether intentional or accidental, will result in a fee of triple the fair-market value if paid within 10 days, or 10 times the fair-market value if paid after that (see the warning about copyright violation, above).

Image format

The original format of each photo is listed under the photo. They were taken in several formats, but most currently online (as of 2004-02-06) are those taken with 4 megapixel digital camera (total resolution is 2272 x 1704 pixels). I'm using a 6.3 megapixel camera currently.

I provide images for stock photo use by email as high-resolution jpeg files. I send the original file, as it was downloaded from the camera. The current standard file format for jpeg-compressed images is the JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF) version 1.02, created by the Independent JPEG Group. It allows for an application marker (called an "APP0" marker) to specify units; 1 for inches, 2 for centimeter, 0 for none. Another marker describes the X and Y pixel density per unit. Note that these markers don't create pixel density (or resolution), they describe it, and can be changed to any value desired.

property and model releases

The pictures on this site are not property released or model released, unless labeled as "model released". In that case, a copy of the release can be provided upon request.

Additional terms and policies:

  • Images are provided in digital format by email or through access to a webserver folder.
  • Image files are originals as downloaded from a digital camera or an original negative or transparency scan. They have not been cropped, color-corrected, or otherwise modified, to permit clients complete control over these decisions (such as color-correcting for their printing equipment). If you want an image modified (cropped or color-corrected) prior to delivery, please detail your requirements in advance.
  • A photo credit must be published with each image, unless an exception is requested in advance.
  • For use on the web, TV, or CD-ROM, lower-resolution files are provided. These are identical those on my website, except there is no watermark in the lower-left corner. For all other use, the highest resolution file available will be provided.
  • Image resolution is specified underneath each photo (e.g. "available format:6 megapixel (3072 x 2048 total resolution)"). I will answer any questions about resolution, but it is the customer's responsibility to make sure the listed resolution meets their requirements.
  • Invoices are provided by email as pdf files. Image use is authorized by a permission statement on the invoice, which is effective upon placing payment in the mail.
  • If the image is used PRIOR to payment, but payment is made within 60 days of the invoice date, the use describe on the invoice will be authorized retroactively.
  • Licensing may be canceled up to 30 days from the invoice date, but if the images have already been provided there will be a fee of $25.00 per high-resolution file that has been provided.
  • Fees for unauthorized use are triple the fair-market rate for authorized use (consistent with other stock photo services), if paid within 10 days. After 10 days, the fee increases to 10 times the fair-market rate.
