the red stuff is the blood of the flagellant. i know because i grew up watching these flagellants do their thing. as far i can remember the cut was done initially by a cleansed broken soda bottle. some 'tough' guys add vinegar to the water to dip the whip. i haven't seen this scene for thirty one years and looking at this picture gives me goose bumps

the blood on the man's back is real blood... believe it or not!
at first they will whip their backs with the wooden bamboo strips and when the back is swollen they will use razor sharp blades or any sharp objects to cut on the skin of the man's back then they will continue to walk until they have completed to visit seven churches but some collapse because a lot of blood come out from their bodies... you can see a lot of these men on good friday in PAMPANG ROAD in ANGELES CITY...
