description

You are standing in the intersection of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue, looking southeast at Calhoun Square shopping center. This part of Hennepin was closed off for the Uptown Art Fair at the time. The KSTP Eyewitness News van is on the right. The colorful lighted sign for "Famous Dave's" is below the Calhoun Square marquee(at top center-frame).

You can tell from this photo that Calhoun Square was built partially in an older building. Hennepin and Lake was a commercial district for most of the 20th century, although for much of that time it came second to the busier Lyn-Lake intersection. Calhoun Square was built in the 1980s, and has itself become a significant part of Uptown's history. We are currently putting together a book of historic photographs featuring the people, places, and events in the area today known as Uptown. While we are using photographs from local public collections, we would like to use photographs from private collections as well. We are looking for pictures from a wide variety of time periods. Please contact us at uptownhistory@hotmail.com if you have a historic photograph that you would be willing to let use in our book. We are unable to pay for use of photos, but will credit you in acknowledgements and by the photo itself. We're looking forward to sharing Uptown's history with others who share our interest. Please contact us by June 15, 2004 if you would like your photo to be considered for the book. We'd particularly love to find some photos of the stores located in the buildings now housing Calhoun Square - the bowling alley, the Save Mart, etc.
