description
The Uptown Theater has a prominent marquee that's immediately recognizable. The building is art deco inside and out, I recommend going at least once. This picture was taken standing in front of Snyder's Drug on Hennepin, across the street.
commentsJeff Thompson Atlanta (for now) -- 2000-01-31 It's great that the Uptown area held on to its two gems--the Uptown and the Suburban World--considering what has happened to so many beautiful old theaters around the country. An article on the disappearing neighborhood movie theater was recently posted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Minneapolis has done a much better job keeping them open, to a great extent because its neighborhoods have been kept intact. Sean Ryan 30th and Johnson- Northeast -- 2003-09-17 Originally the tower sign had a searchlight on the top that acted as a beacon for the neighborhood. C. Phillips -- 2004-05-21 We are currently putting together a book of historic photographs featuring the people, places, and events in the area today known as Uptown. The Uptown Theater (along with the Granada/Suburban World and the early version of the Lagoon Theater) will definitely be featured in the book. While we are using photographs from local public collections, we would like to use photographs from private collections as well. We are looking for pictures from a wide variety of time periods. Please contact us at uptownhistory@hotmail.com if you have a photograph that you would be willing to let use in our book. We will credit you in acknowledgements and by the photo itself. We're looking forward to sharing Uptown's history with others who share our interest. Please contact us by June 15, 2004 if you would like your photo to be considered for the book. The publishers (arcadia press) hope to have the book on shelves by this year's holiday season Post a comment on this picture | |
