description
This is a newer building on the U of M campus, the Weisman Art Museum. They have their own
photo tour if you would like to see more. Designed by Frank Gehry, the unconventional design generated some controversy when it was completed.
commentsKeith Schmidt Minnesota -- 2000-01-24 This thing is a tin can on drugs. I'm a graduate of the U of M, College of Architecture and Landscape architecture. Scott McGerik Hawthorne, Minneapolis, MN -- 2000-02-01 I like the look of the Weisman Art Museum. I certainly do not consider it beautiful nor do I consider it ugly. I feel that it provides a welcome contrast to the buildings it is situated next too. Brian De Lamone Minneapolis -- 2000-03-04 Perhaps it is a welcome contrast. But does it not scream "LOOK AT ME" without regard to the people 'buildings' next to him? I think that the person who screems the loudest gets the most attention. This building is like the local Loud Mouth. Blake -- 2000-05-09 I love this museum. It is great for kids. I love all the exhibits. Jean Brown Mpls, MN -- 2000-05-25 The sun that reflects off the building is
Scott Ornat Plymouth -- 2000-06-09 The U of M lost a good parking lot when they built this lame-brained monstrosity. alejandra mexico -- 2000-06-29 i think this is a great example of modern architecture, it maybe be screaming but itīs beauty and perfection of irracional forms makes us look at it, it is perfect for the time that we are living and shows the progress of tecnology and design. Kat Austin, TX -- 2000-08-28 When I lived in Minnesota-I would drive by this musuem. And everytime I would almost drive off the road due to the glare. I defenitly agree that this musuem is a road hazard. vaasa polytechnic Finland -- 2000-09-18 All who are negative about Ghery's building are just jelous. He's made it in his career BIG TIME and the building couldn't be more unique than it is. Architects, we really need to be different! Ron H Minneapolis -- 2000-11-06 The anti-Gehry comments are amusing. I wonder if people think the world is just too small for ideas that are different from the norm. Sure the building is not what you would expect. So what? Are these people suggesting that everything adhere to the same beige standards set by corporations such as McDonald's or Dayton Hudson? The University specifically requested a building that is "not just another pile of bricks." They got what they requested and I think we're better for it. Roo Minneapolis -- 2001-03-01 Well, we're certainly blinder for it. There's a difference between "not just another pile of bricks" and "a giant, reflective driving hazard." The glare off this otherwise interesting building is going to send someone careening right off the bridge someday. Susan Liljeblad Skaggs Los Angeles -- 2003-01-03 I worked for Mr. Weisman as one of two of his personal assistants for almost 3 years. I was fortunate during that time to have experienced his love for Minnesota, and his wanting to have a legacy there. Growing up in Minnesota I do understand that. He was a gently, demanding employer and through him, and his long-time personal assistant, Ms. Lee Larssen, I gained invaluable insight into the art and philanthropic world. Thank you Mr. Weisman, and Ms. Lee Larssen for giving me all of your knowledge and insight. Your museum at the U of Minnesota is beautiful. I know how much you loved Minnesota, and I am proud to have had the opportunity to work with you and continue your dream. Al Sunnyvale, CA -- 2003-02-20 Looks like something that "belongs" in California. JOSET LORET FLORIDA -- 2003-08-08 THIS BUILDING IS A MASTERPIECE! I REJOICE IN KNOWING SUCH BEAUTY AND ORIGINALITY IS POSSIBLE. WHY SHOULD MR.GHERY'S WORK BLEND IN WITH IT'S SURROUNDINGS? IT'S INEVITABLE THAT IT STANDS OUT AS IT IS A MOST REMARKABLE STRUCTURE. FOR THOSE WITH A SENSITIVITY TO ITS GLARE, PLEASE GET A PAIR OF SUNGLASSES. AND, DO YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT SUNSHINE TOO? Juliana White 724 N. 3rd St. Atchison, KS 66002 -- 2004-03-10 I think this building is a masterpiece. The person that designed this must be an expert. I love the way it is shaped. It fits in perfectly with its enviroment. Susan Liljeblad Skaggs Los Angeles, CA -- 2005-11-19 Oh, by the way...my sisters and I went to see Mr. Weisman's Museum and ran into our family dentist..after all those years.... Dave Minneapolis -- 2006-08-19 Looks shiny, lumpy, cheap and tacky to me. I dunno, the building seems intentionally designed to be loud and obnoxious. But I suppose the U of M is the perfect place for such a thing. Dinzee Lexington KY -- 2007-06-14 Originally a small-town MN lad, who graduated from the U of M in 1962, I did not
then have the privilege of seeing this magnifico museum, while driving home at
night from West Bank bistros like the Triangle Bar (where I met poet John
Berryman, much in his cups) and Jim's Bar on south 15th St., still serving
liquid libations under a different name . . . Dinzee Lexington KY -- 2007-06-14 Originally a small-town MN lad, who graduated from the U of M in 1962, I did not
