description
You are at the end of Bedford Street in Prospect Park, facing east. Growing up on this block, it was common knowledge that this prairie-style house behind the bushes near the alley was designed by the famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. It was built for an official at the U of M in the 1930s, and may have helped keep the freeway(HWY 94, behind a soundwall out of frame to the left) from encroaching on the neighborhood any further.
You are now one block from St.Paul, which is to the east. links
commentsJef Fowler St. Paul -- 1999-11-13 Is this one of the houses of the masses that FLW tried but failed to provide? Greg Hodgson Stillwater, Oklahoma -- 1999-12-28 If this house is located right off the lake/creek parkway and is at the parkway's southernmost point, then it is the FLW house. My father has driven me by it for the past couple years. I thought I remember it being a lot bigger though. Hmmm. Chris Gregerson(site author) Linden Hills, Mpls -- 1999-12-28 The one you remember is elsewhere, and I for one didn't know about it. This house is in Prospect Park, off of University Avenue near the border with St.Paul(considered "Southeast" Minneapolis). I can't give a source for it being a FLW house, the one you saw might be bigger and better. Cedar Imboden Minneapolis -- 2000-01-27 I took a tour of this house with an architecture class one time. It was fascinating to see the inside of a local FLW house. I also remember hearing something about this house helping to save Prospect Park (or at least the area surrounding the house) being bulldozed for the freeway. R Haselius Minneapolis -- 2000-09-22 Yes, this is indeed a Frank Lloyd Wright house. It was designed for Nancy & Malcolm Willey and was built in 1934. It is an important work by Wright in that it is the bridge between his "prairie school" houses and his later "usonian houses." It is currently in private hands but is in rough shape. There are plans to completely restore the home but they are on hold. Contact Quigley Architects in Minneapolis for further information! J Verthein Baltimore -- 2001-11-08 There is at least one other Wright house in MPLS. It is on the road (I forget the name) neighboring the railroad tracks that run North-South between Isles and Calhoun. I remember it being somewhat fancier than this one here. It may be worth a photo or two for your site if you can track it down. Adam Hurt Saint Paul, MN -- 2002-01-31 I did a report on Frank Lloyd Wright's Minnesota work, and there are two other houses nearby. One is that which has been alluded to here, the Henry Neils house, overlooking Cedar Lake. It is on Burnham Blvd. (not to be confused with Burnham Road--rather, just off of it), on the south-eastern shore of the lake. If I remember correctly, it was one of his later works, perhaps from the early '60s. It is well worth a look! Debra Ilgen Robbinsdale, Mn -- 2002-05-31 After a little sleuthing, I was able to find the third Frank Lloyd Wright house you've mentioned. The Dr. Paul C. Olfelt house was designed by Wright in 1958. It is located on the northwest side of Cedar Lake, and I believe the original owners still reside there. The address is 2206 Parkland Lane, St. Louis Park, Mn. It's tucked into a cul-de-sac, but worth a trip. Ashley Minneapolis -- 2006-08-17 Hey everyone.. FLW actually designed 15 buildings/houses in Minnesota. 4 of which are in Minneapolis(one at the Institute of Art). 3 are in Rochester, 2 in Stillwater, 1 in St. Louis Park, 2 in Cloquet, 1 in Hastings, 1 in Austin, and one in St. Joseph. I've seen most of these and suggest checking them out. Its definitely worth the drive. Allen Bachelder Harbor Beach, Michigan -- 2006-11-15 I believe I remember visiting this house once circa 1970. At that time, it belonged to the well-known opera composer Dominic Argento. I grew up in Prospect Park, and before I-94 was built, it seems I recall seeing this house from our home on East River Terrace. My mother always referred to it as the Malcolm Willey house.
