description

You are on the downtown side of the river looking at the Hennepin Avenue bridge and Nicollet Island. This picture was taken from the plaza along the new Federal Reserve Bank, which leads down to the Mississippi Mile walkway along the river. The two towers in the background are residential property, possibly condominiums.

This bridge marks the location of the very first bridge crossing of the Mississippi River anywhere along its length. The suspension design recalls the first bridge here, which was a wooden suspension design.

The old Grain Belt beer sign went dark for years, if I recall, when they stopped maintaining its thousands of bulbs. It used to provide quite a light show when I was a kid; I wonder if it works again (and if the brand exists).

Just a note: the brand does still exist. It was sold to a company in New Ulm, Minn. Will they relight the sign? They haven't decided...
