This bar is on 27th Avenue south of East 29th Street. It's been around since at least 1937(see the link to a historical picture, below). I haven't been inside, maybe next time.

commentsTraci Minneapolis -- 2001-02-11 This bar hasn't changed much since it's beginings. It is a STRONG drink bar. It's a throw back into time. I think it even has the original bar inside. The walls have pictures of when the bar was new. Port holes decorate the walls. The walls are covered with a wood paneling. It's a neat bar. Two pool tables, juke box, a front and back bar (back bar is only a few years old.) Barb Grider -- 2002-08-03 The Schooner is the blue collar worker's type "Cheers." Everybody does indeed know your name, and are quite friendly. Beer Drinker Minneapolis -- 2002-12-02 The Schooner is a dive,Bruce the bartender is a few beers short of a six pack. The new owner is kind of nice and i wouldent mind getting down her pants.E-mail me and give me some feedback dsfile@aol.com. I cant belive that bars been around since1937.LOL Beer man S.Minneapolis -- 2002-12-04 The schooner is nothing but trouble.Bruce the tender is a little slow too. Pinto Minneapolis -- 2003-06-20 This bar has the oldest liquor license in Minneapolis. Gene the Bartender Schooner -- 2003-12-16 There is a lot of history to the "ship of fools." Back in the 1980's a kind soul that was a regular, was shot on his birthday there. He thought it was a gagg, it cost him his life. Another time in about 1985, the bar was robbed about 11:30PM (just after shift change at the police station accross the street). Only the two robbers didn't seem to notice most of the men in the bar wore black shinny shoes, blue pants and t-shirts. The Duke of Earl -- 2004-02-05 I think there's something of a waterfront dive aura to the Schooner. Bruce The tender Minneapolis -- 2004-03-10 I've been working at the schooner for some time now. J D FLEISCHHACKER San Pedro, Calif -- 2004-11-26 Moving back to the Twin Cities in Charlie B. Brown Institute student (mid '80s) -- 2005-01-05 When Brown Institute was on Lake Street, a bunch of us students used to hang out at the Schooner. I remember Al and Janelle the bartenders and Vi, who was the owner's mother and bookkeeper in the cubby hole in the back. I remember some regulars like: Ron Carlson, Dennis, Phyllis and Fat Bob. I was there the night after the guy got shot in '87. He thought the whole thing was a birthday gag on him and chased the guys down the street, but was fatally shot. What a bummer. Anonymous Minneapolis -- 2005-02-12 I believe the Schooner was opened for the patrons of the Minneapolis Moline tractor factory that was in the spot where the Target and Cub foods is now. I also believe that the factory men went to the schooner, while the upper levels of management went to the IOOF building. David Minneapolis -- 2006-02-08 Rumor has it live music may soon be had at the bar. I hope it is like the stuff they do at the Hex bar some Thursday nights. Maybe something like a live Karaoke band but with good musicians. We can only hope. Do they have Summit on tap? Mickey Twin Cities -- 2006-02-16 The rumours are true. The Schooner is now featuring some of the better roots and blues bands in town. Anonymous -- 2006-11-04 It was my uncle that was shot that night in 1987. I will never forget it. Anonymous -- 2006-12-29 The Schooner bar is one of the best in Minneapolis! Everyone does know your name, and if that don't they soon will. All the bar help is friendly. ?????? minneapolis three blocks away -- 2007-11-15 I HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE SCHOONER FOR ALMOST 13 YEARS AND I HAVE HAD A LOT OF FUN THERE AND I HAVE MADE A LOT OF FRIENDS THERE TOO.
