When my family moved to Minneapolis from Montevideo in 1947, we initially went to a Lutheran church in Richfield. I imagine Mt. Olivette was not yet completed. It is also quite possible that we were in one of the pews in the 1950 dedication picture. I went to vacation bible school here. My father, Richard Rodsater, was the cub scout pack leader, and our monthly pack meetings were held in the basement. We used to sneak up a stairway and clandestinely enter the church sanctuary. I still think the church looks big, but as a kid, it was gigantic. Mt. Olivette is one of my big memories living in Minneapolis the five-years we were there. Also, attending Windom and Barton elementary schools...going to the show in Edina...swimming at the downtown YMCA pool...delivering papers for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune when I was only eight.

This is the largest Lutheran church(in terms of size of congregation) in the United States.
Central Lutheran, in downtown Minneapolis, is the largest Lutheran church in terms of the size of building, but has a much smaller congregation than Mt. Olivet.

I graduated from Washburn High School in June of 1956, we had our church service at Mount Olivet. In 1962, my Laurie, was baptized by Pastor Youngdahl. I remember the Christmas Eve service, it was beautiful and I remember that I wanted a recording of the choir singing carols, the album had a picture of the altar decorated for Christmas. As struggling young parents, that was my only gift that year. Thank you for the memories. Diana Ward
