description

This is a parking lot in downtown Minneapolis on 10th and Marquette. Minneapolis has a large Somali community; this is the style of dress that most Somali women here wear (a Hijaab).

I think its neat how Minneapolis has so many different kinds of people. You can learn alot. It makes it interesting. In my opinion.

Wearing the Hijaab is a sign of respect for our culture and our religion,I hope that the Mennesotans understand this!!

  • Tekle   Sweden -- 2003-02-12

Yes I have very great respect to any boby who keep his cultuer and religion. It does't matter were you come from or which colour of race you're.I really give great respect for Somali comunity here in Sweden. They are proud to be African and Somali Muslim.About the Hijab I really respect a woman who wears it,why I say this because they are strong, proud and trusted thats why I like the Somali Comunity.Always people sterio type about Hijab, that woman are forced to wear it.But most woman here in Sweden they wear it for themself and they like it.I never meet a woman who told me that she was forced to wear it.I just want to say keep on and be strong don't care what people say and sterio type about Hijab. There are people there who like to sterio type about Islam. They don't know any thing about Islam.

People misunderstand hijab wearing and they mistake for arab cultural dressing with it. the most important is that the women should cover the parts that should not be seen by man ( apart from parents and bros) and the type of cloth, colour and style of wearing can differ from culture to culture. it is also to be noted that covering parts of the body of the women has also some psychological benefits which the west now suffer its problems. if you need details , contact me ( I am not a religious person too). farhaan

  • Amin   MPLS -- 2003-08-01

For Somali women to come here in the states and reject the superiority of the Western Culture (no offence) by keeping thiers, fills me with pride and gives me the confidence to be at peace in my own (somali) skin.
I got nothing but respect for y'all, because you demand it by the way you carry yourselves.
My question is, how the heck do i talk to y'all? I admit I am kind of intimidated by the Hijab.
holla back if you wear the hijab!
    Amin

when i lived in minneapolis i worked with many somali immigrants in various places in the city. i was very happy to find out, after going to college and coming back, that everything about their culture (that i could see) was very well accepted and appreciated. diversity itself is a beautiful thing, and all i've seen of minneapolis agrees with my own sentiment. individual cultures SHOULD be expressed and well represented, especially in such a diverse city as minneapolis has become since the 1990s.

I think it is great that muslim women in general are wearing the hijab at their workplaces, school and everywhere and are proud of their faith and culture too. Because wearing the hijab in any form is a sign of modesty and respect for your body and for God. It something that we should not be ashamed of. So to those living in the metropolitan cities and elsewhere that still have the strength to go outside and spread the knowledge of our faith and culture, thanks and may you forever be rewarded. and oh yeah -GO girl!

I liked the idea everyone expressed here, muslims and non muslims, different races, whites and blacks.I am to the opinion that any people have never read or never inquired what ISLAM is.Have no knowledge what ISLAM really stands for.Somethink OSAMA is ISLAM..no.please take another chance and study ISLAM.we have done the same to other religions and God bless, as a somali and a muslim, while separating CULTURE from ISLAM, i remain a muslim.
Go girl and do it..so long as you are doing for your GOD.

  • Sir M. Shaheed   Middlesex, London -- 2005-09-27

    As salaam,
I'm a Muslim that lives in London. I have had the pleasure of being inthe midst of muslimahs from Somalia. I find their dress beautiful and I actually talked to a Somali sister one day and admitted that she looked beautiful with her hijab and being neat and so forth. The women in Islam to me are so beautiful when they wear the hijab. I've seen muslimahs from many countries where different hijabs that are so pretty. But Somali women, no matter where they're at, they keep it real. I would love to meet more of them and hear their story.

Mashallah am very happy that people are giving a positive response to the hijab,am extremely proad that i wear the hijab and proad of the millions of women that wear it too..

  • mohamed   London -- 2005-11-01

Most of Somali women do wear Hijab every where they are and they don't care how other people perceive them.
For instance, I was told 10 -15 years ago before most of Somalis has arrived in London, view muslim women from other islamic communities used to wear the Hijab, but after they have seen the Somali women they started wearing the Hijab and that is really a success for all the muslim communities.

    Assalamualalykum Brother's and Sister's
Let me start by saying that there is only one thing certain to us and thats the final hour in which we must all face our creator. I'm very proud of our sister in the picture.Lets all remember that Hijaab is not only a dress code but should also be how we conduct ourselves from day to day. I hope the brothers realise that hijaab is not only ordained for the sisters and that they too must follow Islamic dress code and conduct.
    May Allah us all... Amiin
    Salaam

I believe that the hijaab is a very beautiful and adorable sign for us Muslims.
But because people are ignoring the One up above
On the day of judgment they will be the fools
Because they were too ashamed to play by their own rules
Maybe the guys won't think we are cutiez
But at least we're filled with more inner beauty
See we have declined from being a guy's toy
Because we won't let ourself be controlled by a boy.

    Horta Salaamu Calaykum dhamaan
Marka labaad, I agree many of you said that Hijaab is beautifull and is the part and parcel of our beautifulla religion of Islaam. Lakin, to be honest I dont think that Picture of our sister looks beautifull at all...
Seriously, that sister looks like as if she just put on her Bedsheet while she was in hurry to pick up her kids from School :)) I dont like the colour or the shape of her Hijaab.........
Waar wax kasta style bay leyihiin wear the Hijaab with Style.....and NO that is NOT Denbi

  • Amatullah   KSA -- 2006-11-28

    Masha Allah
    Beautiful !
    This is the correct Hijab.
It should be loose covering and shouldn't be attracting people's eyes (with desire not curiousity).
Hijab should not be fashionalbe or stylish, the hijab is supposed to be UNattractive.
    Plain, loose and covering.

Simply I am proud of the HIJAB and who ever wears it! Masha Allah. I would also say it is part of religion not culture despite I know our culture is also great!
ISLAM is PEACE therefore non-Muslims should learn it before judging it wrongly.

-- First of all I want to say how proud I am of Muslim women like the one shown above. Who stay close and strong to their religon. By not letting our "insecurities" and what people percieve of the hijab get in the way of our religon. I proudly wear the hijab not only to showcase my religon but also to show I appreciate my body and I cherish it by covering it.
Its definately hard going to highschool with it on but I know in the end that I have made Allah proud and I have followed my religon.Hijab is not meant to oppress or ostrasize women. Its to keep them from getting used by men.
    Hijab = Modesty.

  • Hmmm   Eden Prairie -- 2007-07-29

Why is everyone so quick to support the Somali/Islamic culture and so quick to deny Western culture? Americans been made to feel uncomfortable about Christmas and told that any display of Christian faith is offensive to people of other faiths. Why then, is this religious display such a beautiful thing? If there are to be no Christian symbols in public places (such as schools) during the holiday season, why then, can the hijab be worn in our schools? Where is the respect for Western culture and tradition? I'll tell you... it's be swept under the carpet in the name of diversity. Where is the diversity in that? I have serious concerns about any group of people (many of whom live on public assistance provided by taxpaying Christians) who expect tolerance, but don't see it as a two-way street. If so many Somali's feel their way of life is so superior to the Western way of life? Why have so many come here? Why not stay in Somalia and work to solve its problems instead of coming here and being critical of the very people who paid their ticket to get here? So, go ahead, wear your hijab, just don't forget the fact that you are no longer Somalis, you are American Somalis.
We have a saying here... "don't bite the hand that feeds you."

I found this site by accident. I am very happy i have found it. I am a Somali woman and i am proud of all those men and women who keep and maintain their identity, regardless of how dominating the majority is. Somali culture is about respect, forgiveness, endurance, nomadic-wisdom and tolerance. I hope those words spread to the world like wild-fire.

  • Tracy   Minneapolis -- 2007-08-27

Regarding the person who commented from Eden Prairie.
I understand your hostility towards the Somalian pride for their culture, however as Americans or better yet as Minnesotans (since you live here) when the school boards were voting out religion in public school and pushing religion towards private schools maybe that was the time for everyone to come forward and say no. Christian, Muslim, Hebrew and other religions have the right to be in school. The same way that everyon sits back and allows the school system to teach sex in school is the same way that peole sat back and allowed religion to be omitted from school.
As for the Muslim faith if every christian acted like a christian we would not be heckling each other but, supporting each other. Christianity is not the sole religious group in America, and since we are a country that welcomes new citicenship then we must welcome religion and culture. Also, I would also think if you were running for your life, and all you could do was leave and if you were luck grab your kids would'nt you fight to keep your culture alive and strong through yourself and your family. If Somalian here blend into Western Civilization their culture and beliefs die wich is saying they die. Forcing someone to accept Western culture? In my opinion Somalians could have stayed in Somalia if they wanded to be dictated to.
Now that does not sound very Christian to me. Or Minnesota nice..

  • naima   toronto -- 2007-09-06

    Asalamu Aleikum Sisters and Brothers,
As i read through the positive feedback about hijab i had real tears in my eyes. The people are so generous and kind but i also felt the fear of Allah and the respect for Allah's direction. For those women who wear the hijab, i say go sisters go and I also say.. MAY ALLAH CONTINUE TO GUIDE US IN OUR QUEST TO GUIDE OUR DIIN AND MODESTY. To those who are Muslim and are still strutting around without the required hijab, please read about the benefits of covering yourself. To the woman who had a negative comment, which was by the way the only one, please remember we are not asking for tolerance, we are demanding for equity.

anywayz i love the fact tht many somali folks stick to there culture and masha-allah to those tht keep there deen even closer..and for those who have for some wat have forgetten the religion/culture we should all pray for them.and to the brothas out there keep Encouraging and plz stop judgin the sistas help them out and point them to the right directions..it doesnt hurt to help one out

  • K.N. Hoffman   Edina -- 2008-01-24

    Greetings and Salutations,
    Hi there!
I am a sixth generation Minnesotan of Heinz 57 ethnic backround on my mother's side of the family and a 20th century eastern Europe garden variety transplant from my father's side. Am I 100% Caucasian, no. Do I call myself a Christain? Not any more. Just monotheistic. Am I a bigot? I was married to a person of Asian decent and have two children by my ex spouse, so I would say not so. But to be fair and practical, the hijab presented above is NOT PRACTICAL IN MINNESOTA WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT HER WINTERS CAN BE AS HARSH AS SOME PARTS OF THE FORMER SOVIET UNION AND HER SUMMER SEASON BEASTLY HOT AS WELL. Don't get me wrong, my great great grandparents came off the boat wearing some very exotic attire. Most of which worn by the fair gender especially, was simply not suitable for life in the upper midwest. So very shortly thereafter, the ceremonial/cultural attire gave way to American dress. This process did not not occur by considerations given to the climate alone. No, this transition occurred simply because the folks I just described in the last given sentence realized full well they were fortunate to have gotten away from their homelands with their hearts still beating. They were not worldly, educated or well read, but they wanted to become Americans. And so they did. That is all. Take care. God Bless.

and am glad there are people like you who are American and understant what somalis have been thru and still going thru in America. We are not here to change America nor do we wan't america to change us, but for both of us to live in a life where we respect each other cultures. And the person from Eden pr. he/she desires to learn other cultures have brought them here, but they show great lack of interest to learn the culture from within not out.
And yes the picture is Awsome.

I believe that what you are all saying is just rubbish.I mean even though i ain't in minneapolis or whateva, why would anybody want even wear a hideous, heavy, umbrella looking item in America and it isn't even fashionable. Even though somali, shi'ite and other extremely holy muslim women aren't forced to wear this hijab they are in fact pressurized into wearing it by their families by puting a duty on these women while they are really young.

  • Gurey   california -- 2008-04-18

    Hello
I'm a Somali man who is very disappointed about the changes that are taking place in my society. Wearing Burkah or a veil has no trace in Somali culture and has everything to do with Islamist cultural superiority, Arab imperialism and religious fascism brought to Somalia by the likes of Alittihad and other whose fundamentalist philosophy aligned with that of Alqaida, Akhwan Muslimin of Egypt crusaded by Osama Bin laden, hammas , and other middle-eastern jihadi elements . I'M disturbed by the ignorance of many Somalis who think that Hijab or jalabib is a Somali cultural tradition when in fact it has just arrived in Somalia after the collapse of the central government during the early 1990s. This cultural trend is a result of strong Arab influence, especially from Saudi Arabia with Petro-dollars and Akhwan Muslimin organization from Egypt who both want to see an Arabization of Somalia and the eradication of the indigenous Somali dresses such as Guntiino and young girls with natural braided hair like our mothers & grandmothers used to dress and groom their hair. A Somali song goes to say" ido gorod madoow & gabar tomo tidcan waa wax dhulkeenna u gaara ee garta". I would like to know why is it that only women are expected to dress as in the dark ages when comes to western dressing style and all Muslim men wear jeans and suits like everybody in the west???? Hijab and jalabib have nothing to do with religion but have everything to do with oppressing women and keeping them as property with religious pretext.
Bob Marley once said, "You can fool some people some time but you can't fool all the people all the time".
Somali Women have always been free and independent and I hope they become even more free and more independent.
