Linux Tools and Techniques
The computer used to create this website
runs a version of the Linux operating system
called Fedora Core.
This site is also hosted on a Linux-based webserver
(named
Dreamhost,
who I have been happy with them for years).
Linux is packaged and sold by multiple distributors
(such as RedHat and
Debian, among many others).
Linux is one of the best known examples of open source
software, which is generally lower in cost and higher
is reliability. Linux can be bought at Best Buy for
less than fifty dollars, or downloaded free of charge.
Linux has developed more and more features of a
desktop operating system, and has always been know as
a reliable server. I do everything listed below using Linux:
- download photos from CompactFlash cards
(I use a SanDisk ImageMate SDDR-91 card reader).
- Broadband internet access
using dhclient (http://isc.org/products/DHCP/),
installed automatically with Fedora Core.
Once the cable modem was connected to the ethernet
port, the connection worked.
- edit images and create graphics using the Gimp.
- generate postscript and pdf documents.
- Email, web, ssh, telnet, and ftp (using Kmail,
FireFox, GFTP).
- Print photos on Canon S900 photo printer
(I use turboprint as the printer driver)
- Burn CD-ROMs (using k3b)
- Run an SQL database (MySQL)
- Run a webserver (using Apache)
- Edit home video (using Cinelerra)
My system
The operating system I use is Fedora Core 5.
The hardware is an Abit KV7 motherboard with a
2.08GHz AMD Athlon processor, a Matrox Millennium
G550 graphics card and 1.0 GB RAM. I put it in an
Antec Sonata quit case.
See individual pages under "Linux" in the
navigation menu at left for information on specific topics,
such as useful commands,
graphics programs, Vim techniques
and MySQL commands.
