description

Non-residents might recognize this building from Prince's film Purple Rain. This nightclub is still around, booking live touring acts and featuring local talent.

I came to First Avenue to show a French woman I met through this site. She emailed me from Spain, but we met in person after she arrived.

I don't normally try to take night shots, I had ISO 800 film in my camera at the time. My back was to the Target Center and I'm looking down 7th street.

I think the last time that I got carded at a bar was at 1st Av. It was way back when I was 43. I didn't Have my ID with me. When I told them that I had dyed my beard grey just so that they would let me in, they let me in.

ALL these photos are great! I LOVE the city of Minneapolis. You have captured all the sites I remember on trips in such a captivating way. I have wonderful memories of trips to Twin Cities and this whole site takes me back to them.
I spent many nights here at First Avenue, enjoying the acts I saw. I really like this night one. I have one, same angle from daytime, which I took from a car in 1992.

Love your photo! I worked here in 1970-71 when the club first opened as The Depot, and Joe Cocker, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Ike & Tina Turner and other greats performed there.
I'll never forget heading out into that mob of happy humanity with a pitcher of Sangria in one hand and a pitcher of beer in the other. The people were friendly, the music was out of this world and the memories are treasured.
The bartender I worked with went deaf in his right ear, probably because that ear was always turned towards the stage. Guess that was one of the hazards of working at the coolest place in town.
I've been married 29 years now, to a wonderful man (a Minnesota native on a hitchhiking trip in Washington, D.C.). I’m a nurse at a local hospital and we have three college-aged kids. We return to the Cities every year to visit relatives. One of these years I plan to take the kids on a field trip to the place where their mom used to work when she was a pert young thang.
Thirty years plus now, and it's still going strong? Thanks for the memories, Chris. And the geezers thought "our music" was just a passing fad...
