description
You are standing on First street looking toward the river(north). First Street is a few feet to your left, and Hennepin Avenue is one block to the right. This is in the warehouse district of downtown Minneapolis.
On the left is a restored brick building currently housing the Origami Restaurant. On the right is one side of the new Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank building. I chose this shot because of the contrast in style between the two buildings, one ancient and the other new. The Mississippi River is just beyond the Federal Reserve Bank. commentsLatoya Noyes (Hallock),Mn -- 2000-04-14 Thats real pretty. Is that a three story restaurant? I have never seen one of those before! Emma -- 2000-05-26 do you have any pictures of the inside of the restaurant? if yes, can you send them to me at the above address.
Junseok Kim Mpls -- 2000-07-25 Do they have So-Mu-ri-kook-bob? Joe NE Mpls. -- 2001-12-06 This building was originally the Market Hotel. It was located near Bridge Square (Hennepin and Nicollet) which was a farmers market for cattle, and agricultural products in Minneapolis' early years. It became a flop house when the area became Mpls.' "skid row" It is amazing it has surived. Sarah 660 Second Street North -- 2002-05-28 Hey, Joe from NE: thanks for the history on this building. I had always wondered what its origins were. Another of my W.D. favorites. katy iowa city -- 2002-07-04 I heard that there's a really hot busboy there named Pretty Ricky. Rob AZ -- 2002-09-30 I prefer the old building over the boring fed building which has no style or class Aaron Peterson Minnetonka, MN -- 2003-07-14 I wonder how this block escaped the Gateway demolition? I'm also glad the Federal Reserve didn't tear it down either! Sean Ryan 30th and Johnson- Northeast -- 2003-10-24 This side of Hennepin was mostly spared from demolition largely because it wasn't as bad. Industrial activities were also still strong in the area at the time. The FED bldg. was built to surround it because it is listed as a historic structure. They did get to tear down another building on Hennepin though, I beleive it was a shoe factory/store. Gotta save one to raze one. Post a comment on this picture | |
