description
You are on the lower walkway in Pillsbury Park. This picture shows an unused man-made tunnel that I suspect may have used to divert the river at one point.
Minneapolis started out as the city of St.Anthony, on the east bank of St.Anthony Falls. The falls are nearby, and were the best source of power for flour and lumber mills in the area. After mills crowded both shores, The river was diverted to power all of them from underground, via tunnels. I don't understand exactly how this was done, but I suspect this tunnel may have been somehow involved in that project. It has a creekbed coming out of it, but no water. The next pictures, of the Pillsbury "A" mill, might demonstrate the function of the tunnels better. commentsNoah Minneapolis -- 2000-02-25 I've been in this tunnel. I used to explore through tunnels and caves of Minneapolis in my early teens. It's quite a different world underneath Mpls. This particular tunnel goes deep within the NSP Hydroelectric plant. It also branches out at one point into the old viaducts of the Washburn A Mill. This was a viaduct for the flour mills in the early days of Mpls. They diverted part of the river for power. I'm not sure if you can still get in there (haven't been there in years). They used to block it off from time-to-time but vandals would negate their efforts. ;=) HUGO MAQQUERHUA LIMA PERU -- 2000-10-16 Good, it wanted to have greater informacion about the tunel of minneapolis, its constructive process and the material of itself use. The primary function of the water works was to have water heads ready for fire extinguishing. 24tee minneapolis -- 2005-11-07 www.actionsquad.org MasterMind Mpls Suburbs -- 2007-01-15 I was at this tunnel today, Jan 15 2007, and regarding the last comment about the Eastern Tailrace tunnels...this may connect to them but It cant be the entrance action squad used to gain entry. Unless recent construction has covered previous structure, this does not match action squads entry. It is a metal wall with no door as opposed to a cinder block wall with a door. If anyone has information about how to get in I would appreciate it. Post a comment on this picture | |
